Annual Partnership Planning: Art Practices for Youth Development

I had the opportunity to participate in the Annual Partnership Planning: Art Practices for Youth Development, held in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. This meeting gathered representatives from various youth organizations across Europe, each bringing their unique approaches and methods to using art as a tool for learning, connection, and empowerment.

The opening session was hosted by Alter Network, which introduced us to a fascinating blend of artistic techniques — from Improv Theatre and Stanislavski & Brecht’s acting methods to the expressive worlds of Commedia dell’Arte and Theatre of the Absurd. Through movement, play, and creative exercises, we explored how performing arts can help us better understand human behavior, communicate emotions, and bridge cultural differences. These sessions reminded me how art can be both deeply personal and universally connecting — a language that allows us to express what words sometimes cannot.

Throughout the event, each organization shared its own creative practices in youth work, and Unisfera held the workshop “Step Into My Shoes”. Participants worked in teams, analyzing characters from both advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds. Later, we swapped roles — a simple yet powerful exercise that helped us experience how perspective shapes our understanding of others. Through storytelling, roleplay, and reflection, we learned how seeing the world through someone else’s eyes can challenge our assumptions and nurture compassion.

What stood out most to me was the diversity of methods and the creativity of all organizations involved. Each approach — whether theatrical, reflective, or interactive — aimed at one shared goal: to inspire youth development through art and empathy.

This partnership meeting in Stara Zagora was more than just a professional exchange — it was a reminder of how collaboration across cultures enriches our work and strengthens our impact. It wasn’t just about planning partnerships; it was about building bridges — between art and education, empathy and action, and people from different corners of Europe who share the same vision: empowering youth through creativity.
